WHAT IS BAPTISM?

Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives, the first step in response to God's love. It is a joyful moment wne we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ, making serious promises and declaring the faith.
The wider community of the local church and friends welcome the newly baptised, promising suport and prayer for the future.

Most often the baptism or christening is for very young children when their parents and godparents make the promises on their behalf but occassionally adults come for baptism and in a very meaningful way make the promises for themselves.
The service paints many vivid pictures of what happens on the Christian journey. There is the sign of the cross, which reminds us the Christ died for us. Our 'drowning' in the water of baptism, where we believe we let go of all that is past and begin a new life, an image which unites us to Chirst's dying and rising again.
Water is also a sign of new life, as we are born again by water and the Spirit. This reminds us of Jesus' baptism and as a sign of that new life, those baptised will receive a lighted candle, a picture of the light of Christ conquering the darkness that overshadows our world. Everyone who is baptised walks in that light for the rest of their lives, joining with the whole church across the ages, journeying together into the fullness of God's love.
